A research lab focused on Human-centric AI and Immersive Innovation for Social Good.
The University of Limerick’s XTREME Living Lab is based in the Kemmy Business School. Our Lab mission is to lead pioneering, interdisciplinary research that anticipates, informs, and shapes transformative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and immersive media. Our research focuses on creating new perspectives that are informed by technology governance and ethics to inform the design, development, and deployment of these cutting-edge technologies through a rigorous exploration of their ethical dimensions, potential risks, and governance structures. In doing so, we foster responsible innovation dedicated to creating meaningful cultural and societal impacts.
The University of Limerick XTREME Living Lab is the heart and hub of the €8 million Horizon-funded XTREME project coordinated by ITU Copenhagen. Our goal is not only to improve immersive and AI innovation but also to increase social awareness of the value of technical research. The XTREME Living Lab uniquely combines technical innovation, social inquiry, and artistic creativity to forge pathways towards groundbreaking solutions. Our research particularly emphasizes the role of AI-driven technologies in developing new immersive, intelligent environments, actively shaping the next generation of the web, social media platforms, and human-centred applications. A distinctive hallmark of our lab is our strong commitment to the arts and culture as powerful catalysts for innovation. We explore how mixed reality and AI-enhanced technologies can reinvent art, music, and performance, placing human experience, inclusivity, and creative expression at their core.
We actively champion projects that prioritize accessibility, inclusion, and responsible technological governance, intentionally bridging the gap between emerging technological capabilities and critical societal needs. By examining high-value applications in sectors such as healthcare, community engagement, and artistic creativity, we push the boundaries of immersive and intelligent technologies to address pressing social challenges. Through a collaborative, forward-thinking approach, the XTREME Living Lab is committed to advancing solutions that catalyse cultural energies and drivers to empower social enrichment, transformation, and meaningful human connection.
