The XTREME Living Lab at the University of Limerick was established to address an urgent global need for interdisciplinary research on transformative gateway technologies, specifically Extended Reality (XR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These rapidly evolving technologies, while immensely promising, present significant social, economic, and environmental complexities requiring responsible navigation. Under the leadership of Associate Professor Martin Cunneen, an internationally recognized expert in AI and Technology Governance, the XTREME Living Lab was conceptualized in 2022 as a strategic, multidisciplinary hub designed to tackle critical questions at the intersection of technology, society, and sustainability. Dr. Cunneen’s leadership has been pivotal in positioning the Lab as a dynamic research environment, assembling leading researchers across diverse fields to address pressing societal and technological issues collaboratively.
